Painting (Writing) Icons

An introduction to the writing (painting) of an icon of the Mother of God according to the traditions of the Church, this hands-on course explores both the spiritual and practical aspects of icon painting. Students will finish the course with a basic knowledge of how to make and use egg tempera and with a basic kit of pigments and brushes with which to continue the work. Due to time constraints, haloes will be painted rather than gilded. Instructor Frank Turner, renowned local actor and artist, studied iconography under Vladislav Andreyev (and others) and has now completed more than 60 egg tempera icons in the Byzantine tradition for individuals and churches.
